About Outline

A notes app that stays simple, even when your work isn’t.

We started building Outline because a lot of everyday note apps made it surprisingly difficult to write a clean note quickly.

Apps with more advanced features often came with more complicated workflows too, which made them less practical for the kind of notes you write every day.

We wanted something that could do more, without making everyday note-taking more complicated.

Outline is built around the basics: create a note, start writing, and keep moving. Rich task lists, dynamic tables, attachments, and other tools are there when you need them, without making the editor feel complicated.

Notes should feel easy, even when what you’re doing isn’t.

Local at the core

Outline works with files on your computer and keeps Markdown at the core, so your notes stay portable and useful outside the app.

That also makes Outline a natural fit for AI agent workflows. Agents can work with the same notes and files you do, without needing a separate workspace or another layer in between.

Outline was built in Outline

The version of Outline you use today was built entirely in Outline. We managed the product through each stage of development, from early prototypes to the first public release.

A big part of that workflow was built around flexible data tables for project management, powerful note linking, and an easy way to turn small ideas and tasks into detailed implementation plans with the help of agents.

Using Outline throughout development shaped the product itself. The same tools that helped us plan, build, and ship the app are now available to everyone using it.

We hope they make your work easier too.
